    Right Side of the House

The right side of the house is where I chose to start working.  The lift was already there from bringing it up onto the property and the general intent was to continue around the house to the rear.   As it turned out, it was so easy to move the machine around, the work kinda bounced around a bit.   This actually made completion go quicker.
If I primed something early in the day I could move to another location, do what I could and then move again to yet another location or back to the starting point to do another step in the process.

The whole process starts with making sure all of the brackets are firmly supported to the house.   Then all of the cross members are secured with mending plates from behind.  The triangular pieces of wood that are carved are also secured from behind with mending plates.  The old 1/4 round mouldings around these triangles are removed.  They will later be replaced with new wood.   Once all components are firmly secured all of the old paint is scraped off.  The spoon carvings in the triangles get extra attention.  The old paint is burned out and the hand crafted work is sanded down smooth.  All of the facia wood and cross members are sanded as well to make the jagged edges of chipped paint smooth to the touch.
Everything is brought back to a smooth surface with wood filler and again sanded.  Some places get a second going over with filler before everything is caulked as needed.

This will be the one page that goes into extensive detail regarding the whole process that was repeated on the other three gables around the house.

Of course each side had it's own particular quirks and issues to contend with.   Those details will be what you will read and see on their perspective pages.

So let's get refreshed with a before picture of this side of the house.....

The upper right side of the house prior to any work.

A closer look at the gable on the right side of the house.

The first coat of filler on this gable.

A second fill coat.

The top panels filled and sanded, ready for primer.

The left upper triangle ready.

The right upper triangle ready for primer.

The gable prime painted.

The peak of the gable finish painted.

Wood mounting supports for the shamrock panels.

With the shamrock panels in place this gable is done.

Here are the third floor windows filled and primed.

Here are the third floor windows done.

The lower front triangle.

The lower rear triangle filled and ready for primer.

The bottom front triangle finished.  No   needs gold trim.

Ahh ... that's the correct picture.

The bottom rear triangle done.

The right side of the house Gable completed.

Now .... from here I will move down to the second floor windows and work my way to
the first floor.   This is the side of the house where everybody enters so a lot more effort was put into finishing every little detail on this side of the house.

Today is October 29th, 2007 and I can't beleive the last time I had a chance to update this page was back in July.   As you will see, though, I have been extremely busy.

This is the second floor left set of windows filled and caulked.

and here they are primed.

This is the center set of second floor windows filled and caulked.

The second floor bathroom window needs a lot of attention.

Here it is half filled and half primed.  The right side needing a bit of window glazing.

And here it is primed and ready for finish paint.

Here is the second floor right set of windows with painting in progress.  There are a few pictures missing for all of the second floor window work.  It has been so long since I have been to this page I am just realizing that I did not upload all of the pictures to the website so I will come back to this section and add the missing pics.

In the mean time I know I have all of the first floor pictures so I will continue on to the work done on the first floor for this side of the house.

The bathroom window needed to come out ... so it did.

The glass was removed and the window is sanded to remove the old paint.

Nicely cleaned up prior to installing the new bumpy glass.

and now nobody can see into the bathroom.

The siding around the bathroom window is going.

The siding is replaced and you can't help but
notice that the porch roof has been redone.

The saddle has been added at the bottom of the door.

Here is the stained glass added above the door in the transom.

Here is an overview of the side porch.

A close up of the stained glass.

The side porch just about finished.  The railings are painted.

The siding and window to the right of the side porch all needed to be re-nailed, filled and sanded.  The skirt at the bottom was also replaced.

Just so you can see the difference quite clearly, I left five rows of siding unsanded.

and here the whole side is finish sanded.

Four coats of filler and sandings is what it
took to get this window to look like this.

Here it is primed and yes some times I do work late.

Finish painted.

... and here is a close up of where I added a lot of loving attention in filling work.

From here there are a lot of pictures of the bay window because an extreme amount of sanding and filling and redoing kept on and on to make the beauty of this window
an outstanding part of this side of the house ... that everyone sees right away.

Here is the bay window before hand.

First the roof was redone.

Here is a view from the other side of the bay window and you can see that a lot of work is needed to make this bay window the outstanding feature that it should be.

The first coat of filler is sanded.

another view.

more sanding and filling steps .... repeatedly

old trim removed and new trim added.

A closer look add the newly added trimwork.

filling and sanding continues .....

more patient loving care ....

just a few more details to be added.

another side view.

There it is.   with the detailing now added  ... WOW !!!

A wider view.

and another wider view.

... and that is the widest shot I took, so ending the pictures for this page.   The winter work will include making corbels for the bay window roof, as well as for the side &
rear porch roofs.   Notice that the light blue pencil stripe continues around the top
edge at the roof line.
