                    THE  CORBELS

The corbels had to be removed very carefully from the old plaster walls since the walls were going to be skinned with 1/4" sheetrock.  The corbels are merely a plaster casting and care needs to be taken since they are fragile and you never know how hollow they are going to be.

Next the corbels needed to be dipped and stripped of all the old caked on paint that they were covered with over
some 137 years.

Now I am fixing any chips and gouges in the finish of the soft plaster.

So on to the pictures ....

Here is one of the corbels before removal.

And here is the picture after the delicate removal of the corbel for refinishing.

Here they are, stripped and cleaned, with a little patch work already started.  Notice the corbel on the right and look close at the center ball and you will see in the bottom left groove a black dot.  This dot is actually a hole showing that some of the plaster is rather thin!  Thus a delicate operation.

Here is a closer view

As the sanding and recoating goes on they develope a nice smooth finish.

Here you can clearly see how much better the left one looks since it is one step ahead of the other.   The red pencil like sanding tool is what I am using on them.

This is how hollow the corbels are.  The next picture will show the poured plaster filler I added.

The filled corbels were fitted w/ 5" bolts to make rehanging them easier and more secure.

The bolts were set on a slight angle to give a nice tight fit when positioned in place.

Here is where they go !    coming soon

In the meantime the second floor hallway and the third floor staircase and upper landing is all sanded and ready for paint so the corbels need to go in before the finish painting can happen.   I am about to do more plaster ceiling moulding repair work in the master bedroom that I had previously started.  That project had been put on hold
to finish the dining room before Christmas.

Here are the corbels ready to be prime painted.

Nice to have a spray booth available for such projects.

A closer picture of a corbel in the spray booth all primed and ready for a final touch up.

Now the touch-ups on the corbels have been finished and they are prime painted.  They will be finish painted next prior to being reinstalled in place.  This is all that is left to do before the entire 2nd and 3rd floor hallway can be painted.  They should be in as soon as early this week so we can move the work to outdoor projects.  4/1/07.

The corbels are painted a satin finish and I am about to hang them as soon as possible.   4/4/07.

Here the corbels are in position.

Left side close up.

Right side close up.   They are not secured to the wall as of yet.
See if you can figure out why.   In the meantime the correction is
being made.   The answer will follow with the new correction pics.

The corbel corrections have been made.  All I have to do is take some pictures to
post here.   My birthday was yesterday so I took the day off.  All of the inside work is completed and it is now time to move outdoors.

The correction that was needed is the added top on the corbel so that the corbel would be wider than the arch.  The addition was needed since the arched wall was
skinned over on both sides with 1/4" sheetrock.
